I am not by any means a religious person, but I stumbled across this on another blog and I highly disagree with the bold text:
“Love thy neighbor” is not as hard as it looks on the surface. It simply means respecting others and regarding their needs and desires as highly as we regard our own. Keeping this commandment, however, is likely to require the supernatural assistance only God, through Christ, can provide.”
I don’t need any sort of “supernatural assistance” to be a good person and look out for other’s best interests. That would imply that I am too selfish to be a kind human being, thus enlisting the assistance of a higher being to do the dirty work, and motivate me.
No. Not me.
I also realized that those who believe in “Karma” are fullfilling a selfish desire as well. I’ll do something good for this person, in turn something good will happen for me.
Question: Do you really need a reason or some kind of pay-off to be a good person? You can’t just be honest and give 100% all the time without any expectations?
It sounds to me like this “super natural assistance” can kiss my ass.
